Hotel Metropole,
Brussels

In 1890 prices for a room here ranged between five and ten francs, a sum that would also get you a good bottle of wine. Today you can expect to lay down the price of at least a few cases to even get a single room, but that won't surprise anyone familiar with the Metropole Hotel in Brussels. Itıs the best hotel in the capital, and many even go so far as to say that there is nothing to compare with it in the entire country.
The two founders didn't actually set out to open a grand hotel: they were more interested in selling beer. As banal as their motivation might have been, it was the way in which they set about it that really stood out. The bar and beer halls were of such outstanding opulence that it made the Belgians' eyes pop. The beer not only flowed in streams, a steady stream of Belgian celebrities also populated this popular new drinking venue. After several renovations and extensions the revolving door never stopped turning; the world came to the Metropole. Today, the hotel is still a popular meeting place where actors, politicians and top managers come to savour a cool beer.
