Dolder Grand Hotel, Zurich
Smiled upon by the sun, adored by countless celebrity visitors and with a rich history, the Zurich Grand Hotel Dolder is cleverly and spectacularly located in the midst of the magnificent villas of the Swiss banking capital. This superb hotel has been one of Europe's best for more than a century. Although the glitzy paths of politics and showbiz and those of the world's luxurious Grande Hotels tend to cross only fleetingly, autograph hunters at the Dolde (provided they get close enough to their prey) will find more than enough to keep them happy.
The CV of the 104-year-old grande dame is long and densely packed with anecdotes and events surrounding the political, cultural and financial milestones of European history.
Next year, the old lady is due for a new treat: she will be celebrating her 105th birthday with a facelift, albeit a very artistic one under the tasteful guidance of Norman Foster, a man famed for his oversized, spectacular architecture. The hotel's beauty sleep will last a year, after which guests will be greeted not only by new bedrooms and suites, but also by a new manager. Thomas Schmid takes over the helm of Hotel Dolder in spring 2003.
