enlarge Sielaff bought 100-year-old spruce (which produces the best sound) from an estate to build this violin to a customer's order. It takes approx. 200 hours of painstaking, meticulous hand work to make an instrument such as this.
Stefan Sielaff

Like his grandfather before him, the City Violin Maker lovingly restores violins and reconditions instruments that have been altered back to their original state. What makes his handmade violins - customers include violinists at the State Opera and NDR - so special is something Stefan Sielaff cannot describe. The secret lies in the tone, which has to be experienced in person by both virtuoso and concert audiences: this tone always carries a unique signature.

enlarge Typical tools used by violin makers include a wide range of carving tools and this minute plane. With great sensitivity the master craftsman carefully works the maple and spruce until he has achieved the ideal balance between the two and attained perfect sound.
enlarge This magnificent instrument is a soloist's violin from Berlin. The character and lasting quality of its tone are particularly impressive. It is more than 70 years old and is waiting for a compatible buyer. Compatibility is something that Stefan Sielaff insists on, and he looks forward to accompanying the new couple.
