Edgar Brandt - Master of Art Deco Ironwork by Joan Kahr enlarge This gilt ball rests in the generous curve of a wooden beam. A deep crack allows the viewer to glimpse into its depths and discover the cheerful smile it conceals.
Johannes Hofbauer

Johannes Hofbauer trained as a bricklayer and carpenter before venturing into sculpting in 1996. His finely turned works are mostly made of native woods, including maple, elm and chestnut. His aim is to fire the spectator's imagination by emphasizing the blemishes and spirit of the wood and bringing them to the surface. The results are sensuous, sensitive vases, bowls and spherical objects, many of which have been left in a natural state, all with their own unique colouring and form.

enlarge Wafer-thin, this conical wooden vase twists and writhes in the embrace of the rugged stone. The animated, multi-coloured grain forms an electric contrast with the dark, cold stone.
enlarge A symbiosis between fungus and flower: Johannes Hofbauer united heavy elm wood with a glass vase, a spring for minimalist ikebana arrangements. The fragile blossoms are supported by the robust wooden base, sturdy despite its obvious "wound".
