enlarge Zimmermann made this pair of chairs out of an old bath. These distinctive straight-backed "dry-docks" are surprisingly comfortable. And if by chance it should get uncomfortable then all you need to do is grab the chairs by their handles and tuck them in a corner.
Dieter Zimmermann

All those out there who detest the idea of today's "disposable society" are warmly recommended to take a closer look at Dieter Zimmermann's works of art.
He calls himself a simple "furniture maker", albeit one whose pieces are enthusiastically pounced on by private customers, as well as being exhibited in many museums and renowned galleries. The graduate in industrial design takes objects with their own unique history and creates new pieces of furniture, giving them an imaginative new identity. Each of his pieces bears its past proudly, exposing wear and tear, age and weathered surfaces to the world. Zimmermann's skilful art shines a new spotlight on the aesthetics and charm of these pieces.

Most of the artist's works are unique. The pieces shown here are part of a collection that has been changing almost daily for the past 20 years.

enlarge This charming, unique piece of furniture is a "Dresser". To make it, Zimmermann painted several pieces of wood and combined them with untreated beechwood. A set of old wheels affixed to the base makes the dresser mobile. The shelves are secured with chains to ensure that nothing falls off them. Despite the venerable age of the components, Zimmermann has made sure that the end result is highly functional, as is shown by the small red bucket for tabletop waste.
enlarge This playful cupboard was originally intended as a bookcase. Brightened up inside and out with bold colours, it is an imaginative delight for children both young and old. Behind the brightly-coloured doors there is plenty of room for books, toys, cups or glasses. There is no end to the uses to which the proud owner of this magnificent piece can put it. There is also a small drawer in the base, ideal for little treasures.
