CHEF DE MULU
Chef de Mulu was born as the son of a shaman in the Malayan state of
Sarawak in Borneo in 1959. The beauty of the tropical rainforest and
the South China Sea were the formative influences of his childhood
years in Miri, a coastal town near the border to Brunei, and cast a
spell over his life.
As members of the Iban tribe, formerly the most
feared head-hunters of Borneo, Chef de Mulu and his family repeatedly
spent longer periods with their relatives in the jungle. Thus the
tribal traditions, the wealth of colours of his native country, the
rich flora and fauna, but also the wastness of the sea have remained
sources of inspiration until today. With his profound knowledge of the
tropical rainforest Chef de Mulu has also become one of the best-known
jungle guides in Borneo.
Colourful oil paintings are Chef de Mulu's preferred technique.
Professor Dieter Ronte, manager of the Kunstmuseum Bonn, explains:
"His work is full of sincerity and vibrancy und defies the rigid
classification of Europian art."
Since early 2000 Chef de Mulu has lived near Hamburg together with his
German wife and their daughter.
