"Tradition is to worship the flame, not the ash", said Gustav Mahler. In tribute to this epigram, Ludwig Reiter
introduced the Viennese classic Derby, a men's lace-up made of chestnut-coloured calfskin with a light double-welted
crepe sole.

Ludwig Reiter (3 generations)
The success story of Ludwig Reiter started with an order for tailor-made boots for the Imperial Police Force in Vienna.
The shoemaker Ludwig Reiter was born in St. Joachimstal (formerly Czechoslovakia), where he opened a workshop in 1885.
Almost fifty years later, in 1934, his son, Ludwig Reiter II, expanded the business and opened a factory. With the brands
"Fox" and "Piccadilly" he introduced a range of welt-sewn shoes using the "Goodyear method".
The hallmark of this method is the thin leather strips which are stitched all around the shoe and which keep the sole and the
upper together with a hand-stitched seam. The name comes from Charles Goodyear, who invented the sole stitching machine in 1869 and
the double stitching machine in 1870. Shoes made this way are stronger and more durable than glued shoes, and they are often also
heavier.
Right to the present day, Ludwig Reiter, Shoemakers, has retained this tradition of craftsmanship, now under the management
of the forth generation of Reiters. The company's speciality are customized shoes. From a selection of 200 different models,
20 different lasts, 40 kinds of leather and a variety of soles, a customer can have his own personal shoes hand-made.

In the mid-1990s, Ludwig Reiter made a name for itself as a pioneer of the international trend for "retro trainers".
The latest creation is Cricket, a sports shoe made of doeskin suede; it was inspired by the Austrian Army shoes in the
late 1970s, but is decidedly more comfortable.

Ladies have no reason to feel left out in 2003: the new collection, Anna Reiter, features some spectacular new materials.
This ultra-flat mule with a very comfortable heel was made using horsehair. The sole is amazingly soft, a testimony to the company's exceptionally high standard of craftsmanship.
