The stuff of dreams: Jim Proffit at the wheel of the "original" at the Mille Miglia storico 2002.

BMW 328 Mille Miglia
Coupé Touring
A popular German hit extols the stamina of 66-year-olds; the thought that this hymn to hyperactive senior
citizens could one day be applied to their four-wheeled counterparts probably never occurred to the authors. In 1936, exactly
66 years ago, a stylish car was launched and went on to strike terror in the hearts of its - mainly Italian - competitors.
The Munich racer amassed over 200 victories, culminating in first place at Mille Miglia in 1940. The turbulent war years
followed, as did changing owners, until the US collector Jim Proffit bought the 328, restored it and gave it new life.
Today, after long, tenacious negotiations, the legendary racing car is set to return to its native country as
the "crowning jewel" of the BMW collection.
