Mille Miglia 2003
A state of emergency in Italy!
Villagers, townies, country folk and tourists stare in disbelief: with meticulous regularity village squares are covered with red or green carpet, while several hundred policemen are sent to block off the roads. Mayors squeeze themselves into their most magnificent robes, school classes gather at the sides of the roads, and amazed tourists, who actually came to admire historical buildings, suddenly find themselves staring at other feats of engineering instead. Through the narrow passageway between the countless spectators rolls an endless procession of Mercedes compressors, Bentleys, Maseratis, Ferraris and BMWs, many with celebrities behind the wheel. Through historic town centres, and over romantic country roads they race, waving, gleaming in the hot Italian sun and beaming with pride at being part of this thrilling event: the Mille Miglia.
375 superlative classic cars roar over a distance of 1600 kilometres, through serpentine streets, in pursuit of a trophy that is guaranteed to get admiring looks anywhere in the world. Between 1927 and 1957, when street races were still permitted, the Mille Miglia was considered the toughest challenge in motor racing. The roll of honour includes motoring legends like Stirling Moss, Huschke von Hanstein, Tazio Nuvolari, Rudolf Caracciola or Alberto Ascari. Anyone with aspirations to joining this crew will need the following: a classic car, but not just any old car: only cars which competed between 1927 and Œ57 are allowed to take part; a very sensitive accelerator foot; and a highly competent co-pilot. The Mille Miglia Storico is a race that demands evenness, i.e. a specific route has to be driven as exactly as possible in a specific time. Tenths of seconds count. If you want to win here you need sensitive toes and a good eye for the shortest distance.

This is the face of victory! For Carlos Sielecki and Juan Hervas the long journey from Buenos Aires was worth it. In their Bugatti T23 Brescia the two-man team left the 374 other teams behind them. Last year, the South American duo came second, close enough to touch the trophy.
