Mercedes-Benz S: S like Sports
1927. The Nürburgring had to be conquered. Neither Silberpfeile (Silverarrows) nor the global financial crisis were existing. Today the financial crisis is within our grasp and a Mercedes-Benz S is a crystal-clear choice investment – provided that you dispose of more than one and a half million euros.
Hamburg, 10.12.2008
Rudolf Caracciola prevailed over his competitors during the opening of Nürburgring in a Mercedes-Benz S. Of course he passed the race in a modified model: Due to the short wheel base and the improved suspension his vehicle had an excellent roadability. Caracciola’s victory was and is history. And his former racing car, an enormous fortune on four wheels, now belonges to an American since the 70s.

The open tourer was well representative, even though Mercedes-Benz did not earn very much money with the „S“ at that time. However, success in motorsports resulted in an increased demand. The „S“ was made about 150 times. The models „SS“, „SSK“, and „SSKL“ followed. The names are as simple as that: "S" stands for "Sport", "SS" for "Super Sport", "SSK" for "Super Sport Kurz (short)" and the "L" behind „SSK“ stands for "Light". All those models were endowed with a 6 cylinder engine with supercharger, whereby their performances differed very much.
Due to more cubic inches, the „S“ with supercharger disposed of more than 180 hp, the SSKL of 300 hp. The „S“ was delivered with 6.800 ccm, the „SS“ with 7.065 ccm. In addition the Super Sport’s wheel base was reduced from 3.400 mm to 2.950 mm.

None other than Ferdinand Porsche, having been chief of the construction office between 1923 and 1930, was responsible for the outstanding engine. However, when Daimler and Benz merged in 1926, differences between Porsche and Daimler could not be eliminated and Porsche took leave of Daimler, which brought an end to their collaboration.
The model range W06 goes back to Porsche, the ingenious developper of the 6 cylinder engine with overhead camshaft, which was activated by the famous vertical shaft. The three outward exhaust tubes on the right side of the engine cowling make the difference between the model range W06 and its predecessor model range K.
Nearly the whole model range was applied for motorsports. Probably a total of 300 specimen was produced. Many of those models were modified. A „S“ often mutated into a „SS“ and a „SS“ into a „SSK“. The model range W06 turned out to be a stroke of luck not only for Mercedes-Benz, but also for the racing driver of genius, Rudolf Caracciola, who all in all won 51 times in a Mercedes Benz W06.
